Analysis on Recent Four Star Commit Mike Hall to Ohio State

The approximately month-long NCAA football recruiting dead period has gotten underway as of this past Sunday. Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeye's were able to capitalize just before the downtime by securing a verbal commitment from a four-star defensive tackle from Streetsboro, Ohio, Mike Hall. What can fans expect from Hall as a member of Ohio State's 2021 class?

Mike Hall on Rivals

With six of the Buckeye's 10 commitments for 2021 residing in the state of Ohio, the commitment of Mike Hall further entrenches Ohio State as having the No. 1 ranked recruiting class. Hall is listed at 6'3", 290 lbs. and grew up in Northeast Ohio. According to Rivals.com, he is the 75th ranked player in the country, 6th ranked defensive tackle in the country, and 4th ranked player in the state of Ohio, respectively.

Mike Hall Scholarship Offers

Mike Hall has been feverishly sought after throughout his recruitment process from some of the most successful programs in college football. The list of schools that recruited him included Georgia, Penn State, Arizona St., Florida State, Indiana, Kent State, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia. Hall was offered scholarships from all of Akron, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Toledo according to ESPN.

Why Select Ohio State

When the larger than life Hall had a sit down with head coach Ryan Day and defensive line coach Larry Johnson Saturday afternoon, he was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt Ohio State is where he wanted to be. In a recent interview, Mike Hall was asked what he liked about Ohio State and what helped him make the decision. This is what he had to say regarding that as told to Jeremy Birmingham of Lettermen-Row:

"It has always been a childhood dream of mine to play for Ohio State. I was just impressed and in awe of the atmosphere on campus and all the facilities. The coaches and recruiters are really great people that want their players to succeed in life beyond football. Coach Day is an influential person that makes you feel at home." Hall said.

One respected and highly acclaimed scout, went out on a limb to proclaim Mike Hall as the greatest defensive tackle prospect from the state of Ohio over the last decade. The Streetsboro high school standout's most glaring strengths are undoubtedly getting off of the ball and pushing through the line. A dominant and bruising force, Hall admitted in the same interview he gets more of a thrill from rushing the passer than stuffing the run. Before taking the field at the next level, a couple of weaknesses he could focus on improving are hand placement and hip technique.

Mike Hall on decision to commit to Oho State, plans as a recruiter for Buckeyes

What Mike Hall Offers Ohio State

A few reasons Mike Hall is expected to be a great college football player include the fact he has a high motor, and never takes plays off. What impresses coaches most are his quick feet (he moves extraordinarily well for a player his size). With all of the talent Ohio State has locked up during this year's season of recruiting, the Buckeye's already have their core nucleus of elite players when they suit up for the 2021 season.

Information from Rivals.com, ESPN, and the Lettermen-row YouTube channel was used in this article

Coach Kerry Coombs The Bull Goes Home and Recruits Martinez
Posted by: Steve - 01-31-2020, 06:03 PM - Forum: Football and Basketball - No Replies

What's your favorite Kerry Coombs moment from the Ohio State archives? Coaching in only a shirt during a snow storm in Minnesota? Body guard for Ohio fans when Jabrill Peppers loses his temper? Well before you decide, keep in mind the best is yet to come. Yes, the Red Bull is back in Ohio’s Red Nation.

Kerry Coombs in the NFL

After a two year stint with the Titans in the NFL and a run deep into the playoffs and while OSU held its breath and their phone calls to any other coaching prospects, they were able to bring Coombs back home as Defensive Coordinator for the 2020 campaign. Coach Coombs proved his point to the NFL and himself. He belongs in football and he belongs wherever he wants to be in football.

Jeff Hafley Leaves For Boston College

Looks like that is back at OSU after a 15-1 season under new head coach, Ryan Day, Ohio is already in the driver's seat for the 2020 BCS season. The Buckeyes had a big hole to fill with DC Jeff Hefley moving on to head coach at Boston College. January 20, 2020 Buckeye nation dreams came true as Kerry Coombs more than took up the open space.

When Kerry Coombs came to Ohio State

Since his 2004 Ohio State Championship as head coach of Colerain High School, where the lifelong Ohioan also is a graduate, Coombs has been synonymous with Ohio football. With success at the University of Cincinnati under Brian Kelly and Butch Jones, Coach Coombs already had the eye of now Ohio State legend Urban Meyer in 2012. Coach Meyer saw not only a great football coach but also an outstanding people person. Amazing with players on the field, Coach Coombs also had a talent for recruiting. Coombs quickly set the standard at OSU bringing in top quality prospects, setting the tone at OSU, and then sending great talent straight into the NFL. Coach Coombs sent 5 first round picks into the NFL from 2014 to 2018.

Recruiting Cameron Martinez

Coach Coombs wasted no time hitting the recruiting circuit immediately and heading to Muskegon, Michigan to the home of Cameron Martinez. A four star prospect who had verbally committed to OSU, Martinez had a four year varsity run as Quarterback for Muskegon and a high school record of 48-4. Martinez is seen as a Division I defensive back, wideout prospect with a clear football future. This is a cautious and pragmatic athlete with 29 scholarship offers, and with changes at OSU and a few weeks to decide where to ink his talent he is in no hurry to tie himself down. Penn State, Norte Dame, Boston College? Decisions, Decisions.

Cameron Martinez: Dynamic Michigan athlete commits to Ohio State

Buckeye Sam Hart Tight End from Aurora Colorado
Posted by: Steve - 01-08-2020, 10:00 AM - Forum: Football and Basketball - No Replies

Tight End Sam Hart from Cherokee Trail HS recently committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes for 2021. His quick commitment is somewhat of a surprise as 2021 prospects could not talk to schools until September 2020. "Why Wait, it feels right to commit to Ohio State." he told reporters when making an announcement. Hart is the 15th ranked TE in the country, 4th in Colorado overall. He had 22 scholarship offers including Penn State, LSU, Oregon, and Notre Dame.

When it came to committing he called coach Tony Alford and said he was ready to be a Buckeye. Then he called tight ends coach Kevin Wilson and head coach Ryan Day. Everyone was "super pumped up" Hart said.

Sam Harts College Visits

Hart has taken two visits to Columbus, one during the Penn State game. He was recruited by Kevin Wilson (TE coach) and Tony Alford (who handles the Colorado area). On the most recent visit, his family drove around Columbus and liked everything there is to do. He thought the campus itself was beautiful. Hart hasn't met any kids from 2021 yet. But he did meet a 2022 tackle prospect on campus. He liked Roosters near Ohio State for a meal choice. His high school coach is from Ohio State and recommended the spot.

What Sam Hart Liked about the Buckeyes

The coaches at OSU stood out and talked to him a lot during his recruitment. No other school talked to him as much as Ohio State. And It felt like home when he was on campus. He likes that the room at Ohio State for TEs in 2021 is wide-open. He also feels that he will get to player early if he works hard. Even with a 2nd Tight End in the same year class he can get on the field.

He felt Ohio State was a better fit than Notre Dame, that OSU would make him a better person and football player. He also liked that TEs from Ohio State go to the NFL even though they don't get too many passes. OSU Tight Ends learn blocking and the full role in an offense he reported.

 Chase Young Heisman Trophy Finalist
Posted by: Steve - 12-14-2019, 08:51 AM - Forum: Football and Basketball - No Replies

Chase Young has been dominant all season long. Look at his stats. 44 tackles, 16.5 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles. Not to mention that those 16.5 sacks are a school record that he achieved despite missing two games this year due to suspension. This has been one of the most dominant seasons for defensive player college football has seen. There's a reason why he's a candidate and a lot of people think he can win despite only one defensive player has ever won the Heisman.

He and his other candidates will be at the PlayStation Theater in New York City. It has been held there since 2005. Here are the other candidates that will be there and their stats:

Joe Burrow, QB for LSU
77.9 cmp%, 4,715 YDS, 48 TD, 6 INT

Justin Fields, QB for Ohio State
67.5 CMP%, 2,953 YDS, 40 TD, 1 INT

Jalen Hurts, QB for Oklahoma
71.8 CMP%, 3,634 YDS, 32 TD, 7 INT

All Offensive Players for Heisman

Every single candidate excluding Chase Young is an offensive player. Although many believe he deserves the award, in today’s age of football, people are big fans of explosive plays on offense. Don't get me wrong, people love seeing a player disrupt the offense with their abilities, but many people prefer an offensive shootout over great defensive play. This is why the past two Heisman winners have been from Oklahoma as they are known for great offense, but terrible defense. This year, like many before it, is to see who the best QB was by looking at their stats and how their teams are playing.

Joe Burrow

His team is #1 in the nation and my favorite to win the Heisman. He has massively improved from last year. Many people believed that if they had a decent QB, they would've beaten Alabama last year. What happens this year? LSU goes into Tuscaloosa and dominated Alabama because of their great offense. The thing is, Joe Burrow was the QB both years. To go from being considered an average to a below-average player, to the Heisman Favorite, shows how much he can improve and it showed in the SEC Championship Game as he dominated Georgia.

Justin Fields

Speaking of Georgia, Justin used to play at UGA last year. He was the back-up to Jake Fromm and barely got any action and decided to transfer. All he has done this year is show UGA and everyone in the country why he was the #1 recruited player out of high school. His chance to win the Heisman is hurt by the amazing year Joe Burrow is having as well as having a teammate like Chase Young.

Figuratively speaking, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields has a target on his back headed into this weekend's Big 10 Championship. In reality, the target is much closer to his left knee.

Fields suffered an injury to the knee in the form of an MCL sprain as the Buckeyes battled then-No. 8 Penn State on November 23, leading the scarlet-and-gray to a 28-17 win. He appeared good to go by the next game, as he would lead Ohio State to a 56-27 win on the road against archival Michigan, but the injury was re-aggravated on a third-quarter hit, sending Fields to the sideline.

He would return with a brace on the knee after a few plays, and it now appears Buckeye fans have no need to worry about missing their starting quarterback as they travel to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis this Saturday to face Big 10 West champion Wisconsin to determine a conference champion.

Will Justin Fields Rest?

"In my mind I'm playing on Saturday. I don't care how much it hurts," Fields said.

"No, not at all," added Buckeyes' head coach Ryan Day when asked if Fields will rest. "He'll get rehabbed this week and be fine. He'll be playing. We'll use him all 60 minutes."

For Fields' part, he has been spending extra time each day this week working with the trainers inside the program to make sure he is as healthy as he possibly can be when he takes the turf on Saturday.

"I just come in every morning and do different exercises with the trainers. I try to once it a lot and do different things to strengthen my knee and my quad and my knee to get it back to normal," he said.

Fields' prescience on the gridiron cannot be overstated - a leading Heisman Trophy contender, Fields has thrown for 2,654 yards this fall, tossing 37 touchdowns while tallying just one interception. He has also added over 400 yards and ten touchdowns with his legs on the season.

Can Justin Fields Still Run?

A main concern is how effective Fields will be at both maneuvering in the pocket and handling designed run plays with the injury and the brace -- he acknowledged Tuesday that while he definitely isn't the same athlete as he is when he's healthy, he has to make the safe choice when it comes to his own health.

"It definitely limits you from running, but at the end of the day you have to stay safe when you're in the pocket. You're going to be limited or be safe, and you have to decide what's more important," he said.

Second Meeting Between Wisconsin and Ohio State

The Buckeyes (12-0) defeated Wisconsin (10-2) previously this season, routing the Badgers 38-7. Fields finished 12-22 with 167 yards and two touchdowns passing in the performance, while he added 28 yards and a score on the ground. A win would likely secure the top seed in the College Football Playoff for the Buckeyes, as they enter the week ranked first in the official CFB rankings.

"It'll be really tough. They're a very well-coached team, and they've gotten better as the season went on. It's going to be a big challenge," Day said about the Badgers heading into Saturday night.

Justin Fields: Ohio State quarterback on health of knee, preparing for Wisconsin

Ohio State Buckeyes Men's Basketball Season

It won't be long before the talented Ohio State Buckeyes team makes another go at it, this time against Purdue Fort Wayne. There are a lot of returning players and the biggest name is Junior Center Kaleb Wesson. He actually threw his name into the NBA draft last year but decided to return for another year. Last year, he averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds. The only scholarship senior with the basketball club is Kaleb's older brother Andre who is a premiere force on the defensive end. Since he is the only senior on the team, he is expected to be a leader for the team. The freshmen and sophomores will certainly hear a lot from him as the league goes along. Walk-on Danny Hummer is also returning as a red-shirt Senior for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State Returning Starters

Two more starters are also returning in Forward Kyle Young and Guard Luther Muhammad. Muhammad is poised for a breakout year after his production took a dip last year with a shoulder injury. He is expected to bounce back this year after he noticeably put a lot of work in before the season started.

Buckeye Freshman Class

The freshmen class is pretty deep with Center Ibrahima Diallo, Forward Alonzo Gaffney, Forward E.J Liddell and Guard DJ Carton. All these players are expected to contribute right away. In fact, Wesson, Carton and Liddell are known to be called State Mr. Basketball in the past so they are expected to play a lot of minutes this year. We've already seen Carton play a significant amount of time at Point Guard with Liddell coming in to relieve Kaleb Wesson when he needs a break.

OSU Coaches

Coach Chris Holtmann is entering his third season as coach of the Buckeyes and things turned out the way he hoped it would be in the past two years. He guided the team to the NCAA tournament the past two years and they are expected to do so again this year. Last year was a little rough after the loss of JaeSean Tate (Graduated) and Keita Bates-Diop (NBA). They finished 20-15 and 8-12 in the Big Ten conference.

One player who won't be returning this year to the lineup of the Buckeyes is CJ Jackson but the Buckeyes already have pegged CJ Walker as his replacement at point guard. He missed the entire year with an injury but he figures to return this year better than ever.

Ohio State v Cincinnati

The Buckeyes lead Cincinnati all time in their head to head matchup and the first game of the season was no different for Ohio State. In fact, the Buckeyes won the last 3 games against the Bearcats so they were expected to be favored in the game. It was held in a different place this time around than prior years. And the Bearcats did not have too many players returning from last year. They had a lot of new faces coming in and were welcoming the challenge of facing the Buckeyes prior to the defeat. For the Cincinnati game, all eyes were on Jarron Cumberland and Buckeyes threw a lot of good defenders at him. Only time will tell if he will be able to be successful operating in the low post in later games this season.

In Ohio State's exhibition games, the Buckeyes showed a lot of depth. They have a lot of players who can excel when they are needed. The game with Cincinnati was expected to go down the wire since the Bearcats don't go down without a fight. Last year, the Buckeyes started the year with a 12-1 record but they suffered a few losses after that. With most of their good players returning, great things are expected to come.

No. 18 Ohio State holds on late vs. Cincinnati in defensive battle | FOX COLLEGE HOOPS HIGHLIGHTS

Jacolbe Cowan as the next great Buckeye Pass Rusher

Ohio State football already had one of the top 2020 recruiting classes in the country, and just a couple weeks ago they added to it by recruiting Jacolbe Cowan, a 4-star defensive end. You might say the rich got richer. Cowan was a highly sought after senior, and his commitment makes him one of now 23 recruits for Ohio State's 2020 season.

Jacolbe Cowan is in his senior year at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. Cowan stands at 6'5'', weighing 262 pounds. He's ranked by 247Sports as the No. 163 overall prospect and No. 15 defensive tackle in the country, and the No. 7 overall prospect in the state of North Carolina. He's been a quarterback's nightmare, racking up 10 sacks last year as a junior, and quickly recording three this year in his first four games.

He will be joining Cincinnati Princeton defensive tackle Darrion Henry and defensive end Ty Hamilton from Pickerington Central. This trio will give Ohio State substantial depth up front.

Jacolbe Cowan chose to make his announcement on the corner of his high school's football field following Providence Day's loss to Arden Christ School. He even had a video presentation prepared to go with his announcement. Cowan was recruited by Kevin Wilson, the recruiter for his area, and defensive line coach Larry Johnson. He will play the position of defensive end.

RCS CLT: Jacolbe Cowan interview

Everything About Ohio State Power Forward Recruit Zed Key
Posted by: Steve - 10-10-2019, 12:45 AM - Forum: Football and Basketball - No Replies

Zed Key, a 6'7 215 pound power forward from Glen Head New York committed to Ohio State on September 22. Key, who attends Long Island Lutheran High School, is the 2nd commitment for the 2020 class for head coach Chris Holtmann. Key is considered the 185th best player overall and the 37th best power forward in the class of 2020 by 247 sports. Key chose the Buckeyes over Florida, Cincinnati, and Illinois among others. Key's commitment did not come as a huge surprise as Ohio State was the only school Zed traveled to for an official visit. Prior to his commitment Zed had unofficially visited Florida, St. John's, Virginia Tech and several other east coast schools.

Zed Key and the NBA Top 100 Camp

Key played this summer on the Adidas Circuit with the New York Jayhawks averaging 13 points, 4.9 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 62.4% from the field. Key does not have a 3 point shot as he attempted just 4 over the 13 games played (making 1), but he does show a nice touch from the free throw line for a big man making 28 of his 38 attempts (73.7%). It was his performance at the NBA top 100 camp in June that reportedly really got the Buckeyes attention. In a small sample size of 4 games, Zed scoring stayed about the same (13.5 points), but he upped his rebounding (6.5 rebounds) and especially his blocks (2.5 per game). While you have to again not the small sample size that ability to be a force on the defensive end in addition to his efficient scoring had to make Key that much more of an attractive target for Coach Holtmann.

Keys Official Visit to Ohio State

The Buckeyes have told Zed that they envision him playing the 4 and the 5 when he takes the floor in Columbus next fall. The Buckeyes view Key as a physical post presence, but also let him know that playing the 3 (small forward) is a possibility if his outside shot improves. I think that is unlikely as most big men coming to school want to play on the perimeter, so this is probably a case of telling a recruit something they want to hear in addition to what they need to hear. Expect Key to play exclusively at the 4 and 5 during his tenure at Ohio State and for most of his offense to come within 15 feet of the basket. The coaching staff and the basketball facilities stood out as major positives for Zed during his visit to Columbus and were major factors in his decision to become a Buckeye. Zed's parents were impressed with the family atmosphere around the Buckeye program which added to their comfort in having their son commit to a school further from home than many of his other options.

What Cody Simon Had To Say About Ohio State

According to 247Sports, Simon is 6'1", weighing 218 pounds. He is currently in his senior year at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, NJ. Simon ranks as the No. 155 prospect in the country, the No. 10 outside linebacker, and New Jersey's No. 4 overall prospect.

Simon announced his commitment by tweeting: "After much deliberation with my family and coaches, I have made the decision to attend The Ohio State University!! I am grateful to now be able to focus on my team and our success for the 2019 season."

With St. Peter's, Simon had 89 tackles, 13.5 tackles for losses, and 4.5 sacks. Ohio State now has the No. 5 recruitment ranking for 2020, and Cody Simon is a big part of that, as one of seven four-star players who've committed to join.

What Options Did Simon Consider Other Than Ohio State?

Reportedly, 17 schools were pursuing Simon, and he narrowed his top three down to Penn State, Nebraska, and Ohio State, notably all Big Ten programs. Cody's brother Shane plays for the Fighting Irish, so everyone expected Notre Dame would make him an offer. If they did, it was assumed he would be impossible to get, so recruiters weren't wasting their time. When it became clear that Notre Dame wasn't pursuing Simon, the top football programs lined up to recruit him, among them Ohio State's Jeff Hafley.

Why Ohio State?

Apparently Simon's Relationship with head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was on of the factors that made him choose Ohio State. Of Ryan Day, Simon reportedly said: "One of the things I like about [Day] is the way players talk about him when he's not around. I've only heard good things about him, and how much of a team guy he is. They really like him, and that really speaks to his character and how he is since his players talk about him with such a high opinion. That's what I like about him. He's a great guy and he's a team player. I just really enjoy him."

Simon also highlighted Ohio State's style of play as a key factor in his decision: "What I like about Ohio State is they're aggressive. They let their linebackers be athletic and make plays, and that is really what I like to do and play hard and be aggressive."

Cody Simon: Buckeyes commit excited by new defense, Ohio State future

And Nebraska could be similar to Purdue last year with play makers that can challenge the Buckeyes. Hopefully Ohio State is more focused with Ryan Day as the head coach. The defense has taken a big step forward this year with the change of four defensive coaches in the off-season. Ohio State is Number 2 in the country right now for yards allowed per game.

Nebraska is a one score loss away from being 4-0 on the season. They beat South Alabama, Northern Illinois, and Illinois. Ohio State is not used to playing against a dynamic quarterback like Nebraska's Adrian Martinez so this could be a good challenge for the Silver Bullets. Playing against Justin Fields at practice could help them prepare but the one similar quarterback in Indiana's Penix wasn't able to suit up against OSU.

Ohio State Is Having a Great Year

Ohio State has dominated all their games so far this season. Justin Fields has been great with 880 passing yards for 13 touchdowns while rushing for another 6 TDs. Watching film, Ohio State should realize that the game on Saturday is going to be a bigger challenge than the previous games they have played.

Michigan is no good so Ohio State could go all the way with others teams being down this year. They just have to get past a few mid-sized challenges like Nebraska.
