Ryan Day Announces 2021 Coaching Team Changes At Ohio State

Ryan Day, Ohio State head coach, announced that some changes in Ohio State coaches with Parker Fleming being promoted from quality control coach to special teams coordinator. This comes after Day's announcement late last month that Greg Mattison would be retiring. He was the Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator, leaving only one spot for Day to fill in his coaching staff.

Matt Barnes Defense Backs Coach

Matt Barnes has also been promoted to defensive backs coach from special teams coordinator/safeties coach which will free up defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs to work with the defense. Among the Ohio State coaches, Day said that Matt Barnes has done an excellent job in special teams and has a great background on defense and considers him a great young coach (Barnes is only 34).

He also said he was excited at the changes and with Barnes spending his time with the secondary (though still helping with special teams) as he wanted continuity with special teams where he said the team had done a great job. Parker Fleming is someone that knows very well what we do, he continued, and said that he had earned the respect of the team.

Parker Fleming Quality Control Coach

Fleming, 31, has been at Ohio State for the last three seasons as quality control coach and was a graduate assistant in 2012&13 at OSU. He is a native of Atlanta, Ga., and was a quarterback at Presbyterian College from 2007 to 2009. He began his coaching career coaching quarterbacks in 2010 after which he took his talents to Columbus, Ohio where he was the quarterback coach at Capital University in 2011.

This led to Fleming joining Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State in 2012 working as a graduate assistant with offense and special teams a post he held for two seasons. In 2016 he moved to Texas State as special teams coordinator and wide receiver coach and in 2017 they him to offensive coordinator and special teams coach after which he returned to Ohio State in 2018 as a quality control coach while still working closely with special teams.

It has been revealed that Day is also expected to hire a veteran coach, that has previous experience as a head coach, as a defensive consultant for Ohio State. Day went on to say that no one will carry the 'co-defensive coordinator' title which Mattison did.
