Carter Flashing Potential Early and Often

All he does is catch touchdowns. Unlike his father, that is yet to be determined, but don’t be surprised if Ohio State freshman wideout Duron Carter receives considerable playing time when the season begins September 5 against Navy. Carter, son of former Buckeyes and Minnesota Vikings great Cris Carter, has made a case to avoid being redshirted this season and has certainly benefited from the absence of receiver Ray Small, due to academic issues.

With Small missing close to a week of Fall Camp and working separately from the other receivers, Carter has exceeded expectations and was in the top five group of receivers, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Safety Anderson Russell has admitted that Carter found some openings against former Buckeye defensive backs Malcolm Jenkins and Donald Washington in seven-on-seven drills, according to various reports. That’s not too bad considering Jenkins won the 2008 Thorpe Award and a consensus All-American and Washington was a first day selection in April’s NFL Draft.

With quarterback Terrelle Pryor developing as more of a passing threat in the offseason, the Buckeye offense should exhibit some five receiver packages that could include Carter. The freshman is just getting his feet wet at the college level, but Carter is certainly a Buckeye to watch as the season progresses.

Carter played high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, a national powerhouse. He led the Raiders to consecutive Florida state 5A championships. Carter accumulated 39 receptions for 739 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior and was part of a team that earned America’s No. 1 ranking for prep teams.
